Jester, the Police Jester

Ben Roethlisberger, or Big Ben if you will, is known for many things. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, 2005 Super Bowl champion, and creator of The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation. But what you might not know is that his foundation is what gave the internet, and in turn the world, Jester.

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation funds the purchase of police dogs throughout the country. Jester was a Ben Roethlisberger Foundation dog and now serves as a El Cajon police dog, partnered with Jordan.

Jester, whose name was given to him at birth and has been nothing but a fitting name since, is a K9 police dog that now works with five year police officer, Jordan. Contrary to looks and beliefs, Jester is actually a Belgian Malinois, not a German Shepherd.

Belgian Malinois' are top picks when it comes to choosing a police dog. Why? They are known for their obedience, protectiveness, and territorial instincts. Side note: don't mess with a trained malinois.

You will lose.

Jordan's police department purchased Jester with just basic training. When Jester was partnered with Jordan, the J's took on a ten week patrol academy and a five week narcotics academy.

Before Jester's internet fame took off, Jester's Instagram account, k9_jester, was already quite popular with roughly 30k followers. What caught everyone's eye (or what made people look twice) was Jester's speed when catching a tennis ball. Ever since then, Jester has been a pick-me-up to many Instagram feeds. While we all love to watch Jester play, Jester's favorite past time continues to be playing with tennis balls.

Since partnering with Jester, Jordan has created a bond with his K9 that not many have. However, even though the job the two have is serious and sometimes life threatening, there is always some time devoted to playing around. Sanity is key, right?

Jordan explains how "Jester is as fierce as he is derpy and funny. He gets action on a weekly basis and handles himself like a champion. He has never let me or any of our partners down."

Each day on the job, Jester's personality shines, allowing his partner to smile even in tough times. But, as is known with K9 police dogs, a job is a duty.

"At the end of the day he is a working dog," Jordan states. "And one of his duties is to ensure the safety of the public and other officers."

Jordan knows the potential consequences of Jester's police career. "Any time I send Jester to do a search for a wanted suspect I know it is potentially the last time I could see him."

The citizens of El Cajon recognize Jester on and off the job. But, honestly, who wouldn't? Jordan is grateful for how positively the community receives Jester and himself. Jordan will continue to bring "entertaining content" containing our favorite police dog in the coming years.

Jordan knows how lucky he is to have such a great working partner. "I just enjoy having Jester in the car with me. I get to take my best bud to work with me every day. Everyday he brings a smile to my face."
